High School Programs
AYS Partnership
The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Albuquerque Youth Symphony join forces for a "Side-By-Side" performance in an effort to inspire musically talented high school students. This year's performances were December 14th and 15th at Popejoy Hall under the direction of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa. Long-time AYS Music Director, Dale Kempter, has collaborated with Maestro Figueroa to prepare the AYS musicians for this exciting opportunity. In addition, AYS ensembles perform concerts in the lobby of Popejoy Hall prior to Classics Concerts.
NMSO Chorus Coaching
In October of 2001, the New Mexico Symphony Chorus began a unique training program for area high school students. Students from Albuquerque Public Schools and area private schools were invited to attend a series of private coaching sessions. These sessions were primarily designed to prepare the students for All-State auditions which were held the first weekend of November. NMSO Chorus members volunteered their services, so students were not charged for these coaching sessions. 44 students participated in this project, which was held on four consecutive Sunday evenings in October at the Albuquerque Academy. Students were assisted with music selection and preparation, sight-singing, and general vocal skills. It is hoped many more students will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity in future years.
Other Opportunities
- High school students can attend any number of open rehearsals throughout the season to see and hear a professional orchestra at work.
- Selected students from Rio Grande High School, who meet the criteria outlined above under "Middle School Programs", participate in the "Symphony School" program.
- The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will perform at this year's New Mexico Music Educator's Association conference in January giving all-state band, orchestra and chorus students and their teachers from throughout the state the opportunity to experience great musical literature in the beautiful setting of Popejoy Hall.
