Peter and the Wolf
Approximately 6,500 first-grade students in 90 schools experience Prokofiev’s classic work “Peter and the Wolf” each year. Information packets containing classroom activities are sent to each first grade teacher so they can prepare their students. Specially trained docents from the NMSO Guild visit each first grade classroom for interactive presentations of “Peter and The Wolf”. This is a fun and educational way to introduce young children to the magic of music. It is also a wonderful partnership between NMSG and APS.
Over 13,000 2nd and 3rd grade students enjoy a presentation from one of the NMSO’s outstanding ensembles each year. These “informances” combine music presentation and education in an up-close and personal setting at 80 APS and 6 Rio Rancho elementary schools each year.
Nearly 20,000 fourth and fifth grade students attend one of 10 live orchestra concerts in Popejoy Hall each year. An experienced narrator introduces the instrument families, the music and composers. A large screen mounted above the orchestra projects close-up views of musicians as they play their instruments. Many musical styles are presented and there is always an interactive component so students can participate with the orchestra.
The NMSO and Albuquerque Public Schools send written and audio materials to all fourth and fifth grade teachers in advance of these concerts so they can prepare their students. These materials are connected to New Mexico state education standards and allow teachers to integrate the music into regular classroom activities and combine several academic disciplines.
